Extension of the validity of driving and professional licenses

The European Parliament has approved the extension of the validity of driving licenses or professional licenses which have expired or will expire between 1 September 2020 and 30 June 2021 (so-called Omnibus II). The validity is extended by 10 months and will be valid throughout the European Union. Citizens can use the regulation from 6 March 2021.

The approval of the extension is the European Union’s response to the current pandemic situation, where not all citizens had and have the opportunity to exchange cards. The extension concerns driving licenses, driving licenses, harmonized code 95 (professional competence) and the deadline for completing the regular training of professional certificate holders (last 3 for professional drivers) for a further 10 months. Omnibus II follows last year’s Omnibus I, which covered the period from 1 February to 31 August 2020.

In 2020, the Ministry of Transport issued a methodological opinion according to which licenses issued from 1 September 2020 to 31 March 2021 are regarded as valid for another 6 months. For example, if the driver’s license expired on 10 November 2020, it is valid until 10 May 2021. However, this opinion can be applied in the Czech Republic. The new Omnibus II Regulation is effective in all countries of the European Union, making driving licenses valid in all countries.

However, it is still possible to exchange your driving license, there is a list of municipalities with extended powers on the website of the Ministry of Transport, where you can exchange your driving license. We recommend using the online reservation systems of individual offices.
